On Wednesday February 24th, four days after Tropical Cyclone Winston (the second largest category 5 hurricane on record) hit the Fiji Islands, Rotarians from four Suva clubs, teamed up to deliver Emergency Response Kits, food and clothing to four heavily impacted communities along the northern Tailevu coast. We visited the villages of Nasinu, Silana, Nataleira, and Driti, as well as Dawasamu Primary School.
The destruction in these villages was shocking and the experience was a humbling one. In three of the four villages we visited, Rotary was the first responder to deliver assistance. All the residents had harrowing tales of survival to tell. Sadly, in the village of Silana, one village member perished and three others were severely injured when escaping a 12m storm surge.
Rotary has coordinated with the Fiji Government to target communities that were worst affected by TC Winston. Suva East continues to work with Rotary Suva and other Rotary clubs in Fiji and our district to mobilise delivery of Emergency Response Kits to communities in need.
