[ RCSE World Polio Day 22 October 6:30 PM @Cafe 30 ]
The Rotary Club of Suva East is observing World Polio Day on October 22. Our dinner will feature guest speakers Sally Waswo, the head of the New Zealand High Commission’s bilateral development team.As Rotarians, our #1 cause for years has been eradicating Polio. All funds raised are matched 3:1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Many of the efforts that have helped check the spread of this disease are also effective with other vaccine-preventable diseases; support for the vaccine cold chain, disease surveillance, microplanning, contact tracing, and Emergency Operations Centers around the world remains in place in each country for all diseases.

There is a perception that since this disease is nearly eradicated that it doesn’t need as much attention, but in fact, the same things that have made the fight against polio so effective continue to save lives by helping children around the world receive life saving vaccines.

This year our club finds the cause especially important in light of the recent increase in the number of cases of vaccine-preventable diseases, like measles, in the Pacific. Measles transited through Fiji earlier this year, luckily herd immunity kept the outbreak from spreading. With Christmas and holiday travel coming up in just a few short months, we feel now is the time to bring attention to the importance of ongoing vaccinations across the country, specifically the measles vaccination, as well as the safety and efficacy of vaccines in general.

Mark the date, invite your friends, and plan to join us at our October meeting in support of Vaccine Safety and our continued fight against vaccine-preventable diseases.

$30 at the door will get you a delicious buffet dinner with great auctions and raffles available once you’re in. RSVP to rotarysuvaeastfiji or click on the link below to reserve your spot.
